Getting experience before getting a job

Few days back there was a question raised in a forum about job experience. Most of the companies ask for experienced engineers. How does one gain experience without getting a job? This is the main concern of freshers.

Here is the reply I gave. Feel free to add more in the comment section.

  • There are many forums like javaranch.com There is a section for jobs request and job oppurtunity. Also there is a column in the newsgroup where people want their projects to get done. Choose a project which is simple, close to your liking etc. Complete it and pass the same to the requestor. If you have a coordial communication between you and the other party, ask for a completion letter or a referal. That can be highlighted as your experience. You dont have to stop with one project, take more and difficult projects.
  • There are sites like topcoder.com where they conduct weekly competition to test your technical skills. As you solve more problems, you will gain score in this site as well as experience. They give a beautiful logo image which may be placed in your resume. Definetly it will attract the prospective employer.
  • Open source code projects like apache.org always needs technical resource.
  • Free tools like eclipse.com, htmlkit.com etc has a concept of developing plugin. Anyone can develop a plugin and upload to their site. Based on the usefulness of your contribution, you will be successful among the net community and automatically pull employers interested to seek your service.

Great Post for people who are entering in IT profession. People out of collage often crib about not getting jobs with out experience, it is true sometimes when you don't have the skills to get the jobs. But there are many ways today as you suggested well. 10 year back when I started my career I could not think of anything other taking some project work with some company for FREE !! :)

I would like to add about http://www.rentacoder.com ..excellent website which offers anyone for any skills(including tech. writting, movie making etc) to BID for projects listed & start working !! ..great way to build experience & get some money too.

Sometimes just showing the interest and the initiates can get you a job.
Remember Sudharshan (a fellow Manisha Koirala fan who was doing his ME Comp. Sci while we were at college)?. For whatever reason, he was dying to join this particular company. Went to the company's office, took the elevator to meet the HR. Started talking to the guy in the elevator, told him he really wanted to join them.
Legend has it that by the time Sudharshan met the HR, the HR had an offer letter for him. The guy in the elevator took Sudharshan to his office and straight away interviewed him, arranged two other interviews the same day and they told him that they are interested in hiring him.
Did I mention that Sudharshan had no experience ? Knowledge, hunger and passion can often be a better subsitute than experience.
